Cat Grader On Railroad Flatcar - By David Johnson

The model shown here is an IHC grader modified to represent a Caterpillar Model 12 grader from the late 1950s or the 1960s. The cab front, rear, and roof were modified and glazed with styrene. Behind the cab the spacer between the engine compartment and cab was removed, rear wheels were moved closer together, and new stacks were made from wire and tube. On the front end, the steering and blade control details were fabricated from train air brake parts and wire. The flatcar is an Athearn model with a wider deck made from scribed wood. (NYC had similar 50 ft flats, but with one more stake pocket per side). The photograph was taken on Gary Freseman's Arcwood and Rice Creek Railroad.
