Promoting Excellence in HO Scale Vehicle Modeling

DAF 3600Ati Truck Tractor - By Andy Park

This truck was operated by a small hauler in England under contract to Whittle International who was a, if not the, major player in the UK-Middle East freight boom of the late 1970s and 1980s to countries like Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Iraq. The Daf 3600 Space Cab is straight from Herpa's "100 Years of the Automobile" set with old Herpa wheel trims and a scratchbuilt sunvisor added, painted with slightly altered Humbrol Trainer Yellow and weathered with a wide brush and airbrush.

The rear view of this model shows the Herpa stepframe trailer from which Andy discarded the rigid plastic cover, added what Europeans term "tilt" framework and made a tarp from aircraft wing material - this is shown rolled back to accommodate an overheight Compair compressor in a crate and a slightly overwidth dock fender, both scratchbuilt, plus a Busch low ground pressure tyre for an oil exploration truck and an old Brawa British phone kiosk - all typical "groupage" cargo into the Middle East back in the 1980s.
