Promoting Excellence in HO Scale Vehicle Modeling

Smithtown Highway Department International Harvester R-194 Dump Trucks - By David Flynn

Over the past 30 years, David Flynn has built this trio of International Harvester R-194 dump trucks from the 1960s era. Each model is from a different manufacturer and placing them next to each other makes for interesting comparisons. The prototypes were the workhorses of the Highway Department of the Town of Smithtown, New York, from 1950s until the 1970s. In the late 1980s David built #21 from an Aurora Model Motoring slot car (truck). The cab is mounted on a modified Wiking chassis and the 4-6 yard (9ft.) dump body was made from sheet plastic. About a year ago, David built #29 from a metal Classic Metal Works cab and chassis. The dump body is white metal by Alloy Forms. A few months ago, David built #28 using a resin Sheepscot cab, a resin Sylvan dump body, and a Wiking chassis. The Frink HD-42 tailgate salt spreader was made from Evergreen sheet plastic.
