Promoting Excellence in HO Scale Vehicle Modeling

Autocar A64 Auto Transport - By David Larson

First-time contributor David Larson is a 17 year old model builder specializing in HO scale models of trucks. Recently he finished this Autocar A64 car carrier in 1/87 scale. David started the model with a car carrier trailer from A-Line, which was assembled pretty much out of the package. The tractor is more interesting, as it was built using parts from several kits. The truck cab and chassis was built using a WreckedModels resin kit from eBay, the head rack was built from an A-Line kit with a slight realignment of the location for the exhaust pipe. The wheels and sleeper cab came from Promotex models. The car load is a mixed lot of Monogram Mini-Exacts and Ingap models that were painted to their historically accurate paint schemes. The truck also features a scratchbuilt driver figure. The model was painted using metallic and satin acrylics, and the color scheme for the truck is based off the color palette of a character from David's favorite video game, Touhou Project. The truck’s headlight really do glow in the dark, thanks to luminescent paint that was applied to the headlights and running lights. When under a black light (bottom photo), the glow from the paint is really beautiful, and it’s far cheaper and more realistic than LED bulbs David says.
